CHAPTER 12

A few days after Leni had left for Germany he received her first letter.

22 April 1960, 8pm

Oh, my darling,

Once more we are apart. I cannot tell you how much I am already missing you. Your face wakes me every morning. It wakes every sky. What am I to do? Sometimes I despair of your father. My mother thinks you will never be able to overcome this and my friends say to continue with this is not reasonable. It is so sad. Sometimes I feel this cold reasonableness will kill me. It is like ice in my heart. If I listen to this then I shall become a shadow of me. Oh, darling, I do not want to be this shadow. If I must be a shadow it is only to you. Then I shall always be near you wherever you are, and my reason is love, love for you. So you see, darling, I do not give up and neither must you. In September I shall write to the British Embassy for a work permit. We must make this bloody muddle work. It is funny when I think of this. I suppose we were always in a muddle but I never thought of it so much till now.

I love you so terribly, and much more.
